TripAdvisor revealed its users’ most popular global destinations today, with not one entry from England in the list. Despite London being named the party capital of Europe by users and Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture status in 2008, neither made the top 25 destinations in the website’s list. Edinburgh came in 21st in the top global destinations and Scotland dominated the top 25 UK list with entries from the Isle of Skye, Loch Lomond and Islay. “Millions of travellers around the world have spoken and this will serve as a stark wake-up call to London in particular. London is one of the greatest cities in the world but with the Olympics just two years away there is clearly still work to do to convince travellers that England’s capital is a world-class tourist destination,” said TripAdvisor spokesperson Emma O’Boyle. Other lists proved surprisingly successful for England, including Bath beating exotic locations to top the list of best spa location and Weymouth in Dorset was identified as an emerging destination after its online search activity increased this year. “It’s fantastic to see travellers appreciating the town’s beautiful beach and old-fashioned English hospitality,” added O’Boyle.
