Etiqa has unveiled Project Firefly, an environmental initiative focused on preserving Malaysia's iconic firefly habitats along Sungai Panjang in Sabak Bernam.
Collaborating with the Malaysian Nature Society, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and the Sabak Bernam District Council, the project aims to bolster the mangrove ecosystem that supports local ecotourism and community livelihoods.
The project involves planting 130 Sonneratia cseolaris saplings and 200 seeds, restoring habitats, and engaging 50 Etiqa volunteers in a community-driven effort across a 10-kilometre stretch.
An awareness session led by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Faculty of Science highlighted the ecological significance of fireflies and the necessity for long-term conservation.
For the fireflies, for the future
Fireflies serve as vital indicators of mangrove ecosystem health, which is crucial for environmental balance and the prosperity of surrounding communities.
However, their populations are dwindling due to habitat loss from pollution, deforestation, and light pollution. This decline threatens local species and the livelihoods of fishermen and villagers dependent on healthy river ecosystems and firefly-based tourism.
Fukhairudin Mohd Yusof, CEO of Etiqa General Insurance Berhad, stated, "By conserving firefly habitats, we are not only protecting an irreplaceable part of Malaysia's biodiversity but also helping sustain the ecotourism and river-based livelihoods of Sungai Panjang residents."
IS Shanmugaraj, Executive Director of the Malaysian Nature Society, praised Etiqa's proactive approach, emphasising the importance of collective action in meaningful conservation efforts.
The initiative aims to inspire further collaboration between companies, environmental organisations, and local communities to protect biodiversity and support sustainable livelihoods.
