According to Friso Roscam Abbing, spokesman for European Union Justice
and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini, Brussels would evaluate whether
the security benefits to the system outweighed the added inconvenience to
passengers, AFP reported.
The EU spokesman was quoted saying that such a system was already in place and working well in Australia.
Last week, US President George Bush signed legislation introducing
counter-terrorism measures, such as an electronic screening system for
arrivals from countries allowed to visit the US without a visa.
The scheme will require travellers from western Europe and nations who
benefit from the US visa waiver programme, to register online and fill out
a questionnaire before travelling.
