The ban on all Indonesian airlines flying into EuropeanUnion airspace has been upheld because of safety concerns, the Antara newsagency has reported. The European Commission’s Safety Committee unanimouslyrejected an Indonesian request to readmit three carriers - Mandala, Airfast andnational carrier Garuda Indonesia.
“Indonesianauthorities have still not developed and implemented an efficient oversightprogram on any of the carriers under their regulatory control,” a Committeestatement said. However Indonesiahas hit out at the ruling, bemoaning the EU’s unilateral stance; “We have done everything to comply with their recommendations but wedid not get an appropriate response,” said Indonesian Foreign Affairsspokesperson Teuku Faizasyah. “We regret the unilateral ban since the verybeginning. It was imposed without prior consultation with Indonesia. The EU’s judgementdisappoints us,” he continued.
