The European Union (EU) has signaled that governments will proceed with subsidies for the Airbus A350 even if a pending WTO decision finds previous aid to be illegal. According to a Bloomberg report, EU spokesperson, Lutz Guellner, said that the A350 loans have “no relation to the current WTO litigation”. The EU stance threatens to escalate a five-year battle between Airbus and Boeing, with the US planemaker attempting to derail government loans for the new Airbus model. France, Germany and the UK have pledged loans worth EUR3.3 billion (US$4.7 billion) for the A350, which will compete with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner when it enters the market in 2013.
