Fewer international passengers are visiting European cities for long-haul stopovers, according to new analysis. A report by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) compiled from US Government I-94 forms has revealed that there is now more passenger traffic in the Middle East and Africa. The number of forms showing the Middle East as the first destination nearly doubled to 2.1 million last year, while Africa saw growth from 203, 867 travellers in 2005 to 298, 970 last year. CAPA has suggested that the growth in Gulf carriers has taken customers that usually stop in Europe, which has seen the lowest amount of traffic. “Europe has no doubt seen the apex of its role as the gateway to Africa and Asia,” said the group. “US, with its unpopular visa and security restrictions, will continue to be bypassed by foreigners.”
