The European Commission has taken four Indonesian airlines off its aviation blacklist, citing improvements in safety, the BBC has reported. National carrier Garuda Indonesia will now be able to resume services to Europe, while Airfast Indonesia, Mandala Airlines and Premiair have also seen restrictions lifted.
Europe banned all Indonesia-based jets from its airspace in July 2007, after a series of air crashes in Indonesia. Garuda is initially likely to resume services to Amsterdam and Frankfurt, before extending to further EU hubs.
“Significant improvements and accomplishments of the Indonesian civil aviation authority are recognised in the area of safety,” a statement from the European Commission was reported saying.
Meanwhile, the Yemeni national carrier, Yemenia, is not on the new list, despite safety concerns raised after one of its aircraft crashed last month, killing 152 people.
