Expedia poll plays to comedy stereotypes

Brace yourselves for the shock revelation of the year; French tourists are considered rude! Incredible! Who would’ve thought it? This startling discovery is the one of the key findings of a recent survey by Expedia, which also contained such alarming insights as Italians being well-dressed, Americans being loud, and Japanese being polite. The report stopped short of stating that the pope was Catholic, but I have a sneaking suspicion this may be revealed in a later report.
Of course this is complete hogwash; we know well enough to judge people on their own merits, and not get caught in the trap of racial stereotyping. But in this politically correct world it is interesting to see that our minds haven’t been completely sanitised. It’s rare nowadays to find anyone prepared to voice these stereotypes publicly, for fear of being labelled racist. No longer are Aussies arrogant, or Germans efficient, or the English reserved (or, after a few beers, violent hooligans); our minds have been cleansed of any hint of racism, banishing these stereotypes to the annals of an unenlightened past.
But Expedia’s survey reveals something a little deeper than its obvious answers immediately suggest; that the racial stereotype is alive and well in the 21st Century. So don’t worry, if you’re American, it’s okay to be brash. Italians, be smooth and charming - people expect it. And the French, be as rude as you like - it’s fine! After all you’re also great lovers, so it’s not all bad news. After all, wouldn’t it be a shame to rid ourselves of these stereotypes altogether - they add some much-needed comedy to the murky issue of multiculturalism.
