In a bid to improve the Passport administration in India, authorities will set up 77 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), service centres, and 14 mini PSKs in a three phase development programme. This will triple the number of passport counters in the country to 1,250, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told a press meet in Delhi. At present there are just 37 passport offices in the country and 50 million Indian passport holders.
Over five million passports are issued every year, he said, adding that sites for 25 passport service centres in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu had been selected. PSKs are already operational in Bengaluru, Mangalore, Hubli and Chandigarh.
