SINGAPORE, 17 March 2010 - With just 150 days to go to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Official Hotel Partner, Fairmont Singapore paints a colourful countdown with the first YOG Mural, created by its very own staff member and artist Charlene Tenio. Guests and diners can catch Charlene ‘live’ in action at Prego Restaurant from 17 to 21 March daily during lunch, as she strikes the canvas with a kaleidoscope of rich colours and artistic strokes in an interactive exhibition fusing dining, art and sports.
Measuring an impressive 2.3m x 1.2m, the vibrant acrylic on canvas painting is the foremost artpiece featuring the adorable YOG mascots Lyo and Merly, set against a backdrop of Singapore’s iconic landmarks. It depicts the story of aspiring young athletes dreaming of sporting glory at the Youth Olympic Games, amidst the typical trials of adolescence symbolised by the stirring waves of the sea.
The hotel also commemorated the 150-day mark by launching a 2-metre Countdown Clock displayed in its lobby, in partnership with Omega, the Official Timekeeper of the YOG.
Commenting on the hotel’s line-up of activities pre-Games, Mr Ian Wilson, General Manager of Fairmont Singapore and Regional Vice President, Asia of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, says, “As we celebrate 150 days to the historic Youth Olympic Games, we also look forward to welcoming some 400 officials and delegates from 205 participating National Olympic Councils (NOCs) that will be attending the Chefs-de-Mission (CDM) Seminar at Fairmont Singapore next week.”
The hotel will be hosting the YOG’s first CDM Seminar, a landmark pre-Games event in which the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee will update the various NOCs on plans and preparatory work for the Games, to enable the Chefs-de-Mission (team leaders) to better prepare their contingents when they compete in the Games in August.
Adds Mr Wilson, “As the organizing committee sets the stage for a successful Games, we also want to do our part to show our support for this historic Olympic event. Art is a universal yet unique way to express and communicate our involvement with the Youth Olympic Games. Whether you’re young or old, our local or international guest, it is easy to appreciate this original work of art that vividly captures the essence of the Games, and the dynamic spirit of youth and sports.”
Entitled “Bubbles of Dreams and Glory”, the mural depicts the story of aspiring young athletes dreaming of sporting glory at the Youth Olympic Games, even as they go through the typical trials of adolescence represented by the stirring waves of the sea.
Says the artist Charlene Tenio, a full-time Guest Relations Officer at Fairmont Singapore and a native of The Philippines, “Our teenage years are filled with a myriad of changes and challenges - physically, emotionally and mentally - be it in school or at home, in our family or relationships. Yet, it is also the crucial time when we begin to find our identity, discover our potential and dream our highest ambitions.”
“I wanted to capture that distinct period in the life of a young athlete, who is training and dreaming of that highest badge of honour – the Olympic Gold - in whatever field of sports that he or she has chosen to excel in, symbolised by the dream bubbles of water amidst the turbulent tides of change.”
Adds Charlene, “I also wanted to portray Singapore’s pride and joy in hosting the first Youth Olympic Games, hence I set the mascots against the nation’s most recognizable icons - the Esplanade, the Merlion and the Fairmont Singapore, which is also the first hotel partner in the history of the Olympic Movement.”
Charlene will be painting ‘live’ at Prego Restaurant on level 1 of Fairmont Singapore from 17 to 21 March, from 12pm to 2pm daily. This interactive exhibition is open to hotel and restaurant guests, as well as the general public. Upon completion, the mural will remain on display at Prego till the end of the Games, in addition to a selected range of Official YOG Merchandise, which will be available for sale later in March.
