British families are swapping winter sun for a domestic break this half term, according to Hotels.com. Searches for accommodation in Whitstable and Cromer has increased 441 percent and 439 percent respectively between 1 and 15 February 2011 compared to the same period in 2010, the hotel provider revealed. Ambleside, Eastbourne, Weston-super-Mare and Llandudno have also increased in popularity on the website. Alison Couper, global communications director at Hotels.com said that APD and Egypt’s protests may have affected the family holiday decision.”It seems families are looking to the UK’s most traditional holiday hotspots for a getaway this half term,” she said. “With budgets stretched, a rise in APD and some of the more traditional overseas half-term destinations no longer accessible to families, it seems the UK is benefitting from a return to old-fashioned holiday getaways.” Popular overseas destinations include Tallinn and Athens, where hotel rates have dropped.
