The number of Taiwanese outbound tourists in July dropped by 10% from a year ago. China Post has reported that figures fell to 746,000, mainly due to poor performance of the local stock market and surging flight ticket prices, quoting the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. Meanwhile, local travel agencies estimated that there might be a drop of 200 outbound tourist groups in August, partly because of Ghost Month (the seventh lunar month) that falls during this month.
Yao Ta-kuang, Chairman of the local travel agent association was quoted saying that he had received complaints of poor performance from travel agencies. The sharp rise in ticket fares for flights to Europe and the US had also undermined consumers’ willingness and ability to travel abroad, the report said. Even tourist groups bound for Japan and South Korea, which used to be popular with local consumers, now can hardly be organised, with consumers reluctant to even inquire about relevant information, the report said.
