To counter the recession and slowdown in business, many foreign airlines in India are offering special fares ahead of the summer holidays.
An Economic Times report said KLM was giving Delhi-London for INR9,900 (US$196) excluding the taxes while Emirates was charging Mumbai-Dubai-London for INR19,880. Thai Airways has come out with a fare of INR35,000 (inclusive of taxes) on the Mumbai-Sydney sector.
The report quoted Rajji Rai, President Travel Agent Association of India (TAAI) as saying; “International airlines like Etihad, British Airways, Cathay Pacific are seen offering more competitive prices than before for the various international destinations from India.”
He was reported saying that discounts that were being offered to passengers flying currently were a result of the global recession.
“Airlines have reduced prices as travelling has become less, in order to meet expenses and get more loads on flights, the airlines are coming up with special fares.”
According to TAAI, the industry’s apex body, there has been a drop in summer packages to the tune of 30% to 35% this year as compared to last year.
