Formula 1 returns to Portugal in 2027 and 2028

The Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix is set to return to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2027 and 2028, following an official announcement by Formula 1. This decision, supported by Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve, marks a significant achievement for the region, promising substantial economic and promotional benefits.

The inclusion of Portugal in the Formula 1 calendar underscores the country's organisational prowess and the technical excellence of the Algarve circuit. Previously, the circuit played a crucial role during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, maintaining high operational standards amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies from those years indicated a combined economic impact of approximately $106 million (€100 million) per Grand Prix, alongside significant international exposure.

The return of Formula 1 is expected to surpass previous economic impacts, thanks to the resurgence of international travel and the growing global audience for the sport. Pedro Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services, stated, “The return of Formula 1 to Portugal in 2027 and 2028 confirms the country’s growing status as a leading destination for world-class events.”

Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, highlighted the event's potential to enhance Portugal's image as a vibrant destination, whilst André Gomes, President of Turismo do Algarve, emphasised the strategic vision for the Algarve and its commitment to hosting the event with excellence.

The return of Formula 1 is poised to reinforce the Algarve's position as a prime location for major international events, boosting tourism and the regional economy.
