Train operators in France have been forced to apologise after a service from Strasbourg to the Spanish border was described by passengers as “hell on wheels”. The night train, carrying 4,295 passengers, eventually arrived 13 hours late after a series of mishaps including a driver reporting late for duty, an engine failure, a blockage on the line and a group of drunken men invading carriages.
“We are very relieved to have arrived,” a passenger was reported saying after the marathon journey. “We feel like we’ve been shipwrecked.”
The train’s operator, SNCF, said it was an “insolated” incident and has offered to refund passengers’ fares.
