Indonesia’s state-run low-cost carrier Citilink is planning to take over the struggling Tigerair Mandala, it has been revealed.
Citilink’s president director, Arif Wibowo confirmed the plans to Indonesia’s Antara news agency this week.
“That is right, we intend to take over Tigerair,” Arif was quoted saying. “[We wish to] strengthen Citilink’s development and expansion programs in the future.”
Arif said Citilink had already submitted an offer to Tigerair, and had received a response. “Due diligence will be conducted this week,” he added.
Tigerair Mandala was formed in 2012 after Tiger Airways and the Saratoga Group took over the former Mandala Airlines, which had been grounded for more than a year.
But the low-cost carrier has continued to struggle however, and grounded multiple flights in the last few months. It is not clear whether Citilink – a subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia – would merge Tigerair into its own operations of continue to operate it separately.
Antara reported that AirAsia is also believed to be interested in taking over Tigerair Mandala.
