Gatwick Airport has set aside GBP30 million in funds to stop future potential floods following an internal review into the flooding on Christmas Eve.
The airport has accepted all recommendations put forward by non-executive director David McMillan and is already installing new water storage chambers and better protection at the North Terminal to be more resilient to flooding.
All short-term actions are expected to be completed by October, with there to be a focus on passenger welfare and contingency plans with airlines and the local community.
The airport handed out GBP100 of high street shopping vouchers to each affected passenger on Christmas Eve, which saw nearly 30% of flights cancelled.
“There are clearly lessons that we and the airport community can learn from the events of Christmas Eve. It is important we now look to the future and make the necessary improvements to ensure the airport is more resilient to flooding,” said the airport’s CEO Stewart Wingate.
