A new five-star ‘yacht hotel’ in Gibraltar is said to have seen a “staggering” interest in corporate enquiries in just five weeks.
The hotel, named Sunborn Gibraltar, has seen GBP5 million worth of enquiries come in after it exhibited at The Meetings Show UK.
A global hotel brand is to operate the floating hotel when it opens later this year, but is yet to be named.
The GBP120m floating hotel sits in the Ocean Village Marina with 189 rooms, a spa, fitness centre, cotail lounges, restaurants and ballroom.
“When we launched the yacht hotel at The Meetings Show UK at London Olympia we got some very encouraging feedback. Everyone, without exception, was excited about the idea of a floating five star hotel and you could see it was going to attract a lot of interest,” said Sunborn’s marketing director Andrew Shaw.
“Now we are seeing that interest translated into a very high level of enquiries, a level that caught us somewhat by surprise – not least because we haven’t even announced which global brand will be operating Sunborn, an announcement we’ll be making over the coming weeks,” he added.
The hotel is said to be filling a need for more luxury product in Gibraltar but said it will need to work with local hoteliers for events that have a higher number of delegates than its capacity.
As well as business events the floating hotel is also hoping to cash in on the 800 weddings that take place in Gibraltar each year by non-residents.
