Glasgow Prestwick Airport has announced its sixth consecutive year of profitability, achieving a £3.5 million operating profit for the year ending 31 March 2025. This marks an increase of £300,000 from the previous year. The airport, known for its cargo and freight operations, is on track to triple its cargo volume by 2025/26, leading to the creation of more than 150 new roles.
The airport has reinvested £10 million over the past 18 months in airfield improvements, ground services equipment, and security to support its growth ambitions. CEO Ian Forgie highlighted the airport's strategic focus on expanding its cargo operations, which has positioned it as a key UK gateway for the Asian market. In May 2025, two Chinese carriers established bases at Prestwick, offering daily services to China.
Forgie stated, "Cargo volumes are set to treble in 2025/26 with the Airport currently handling 21 wide-bodied freighters a week and more than 3,800 tonnes of cargo a month." This expansion has bolstered the Ayrshire economy, directly employing over 450 staff and supporting more than 3,300 full-time equivalent jobs.
Prestwick's reputation extends to military operations, serving NATO-aligned countries and hosting visits from global leaders. Additionally, Ryanair, celebrating 30 years at Prestwick, has invested £5 million in its training facility, creating up to 500 new positions.
Chair Willie Mackie praised the airport's strategic focus, stating, "The performance this financial year to date has been exceptional." The airport's continued success underscores its role as a vital economic driver for the region.
