Glimmer of hope amid global aviation slump - OAG

This month’s analysis of the OAG (Official Airline Guide) schedules database indicates that airlines worldwide will operate 2% fewer flights in August 2009, compared to August 2008. Although just marginal, after months of negative growth there are positive numbers on seat capacity. The total number of scheduled flights operating in August 2009 is 2,533,408 with an overall seat offering of 314,198,752, an increase of 472,839 from August 2008.
The Middle Eastern region continues to reflect impressive growth yet again. The number of flight activity and seat capacity Flights and capacity within Middle East are scheduled to rise by 19% and 18% respectively. Total flights scheduled to operate within Middle East are 43,054 and seat capacity offered is 6,632,468. Flight activity and seat capacity to/from the Middle East also reflects a strong increase of 13% & 14% respectively with frequency of 50,816 and seat capacity of 11,148,454 in August 2009.
The number of flights to/from Asia Pacific reflects a drop of 3% with 58,046 operations as compared to 59,632 for the same period last year and a seat capacity decrease of 317,235 to 14,055,256 compared to 14,372,491 for August 2008. Within Asia/Pacific however, there will be 32,003 more flights and 5,757,245 more seats than in August 2008 resulting in an increase of 6% in flight operations and 7% in seat offerings.
