As sports and events-tourism takes-off in India after hosting the Commonwealth Games and ICC Cricket World Cup, the niche is being seen as a great potential money spinner. Goa state government is looking to broaden its tourism appeal by developing sports based tourism [products in the state.
Tourism Minister Nilkant Halarnkar told UNI that there is proposal under consideration to bring sports resorts at Baga, Britona River side, Mayem Lake, Vasco residency and Keserval Spring under PPP mode in Goa. According to Halarnkar, the properties are lying idle leading to illegal encroachment, unauthorised trespass, dumping of garbage.
If thought out and well planned, these sites have the potential for development which could enhance the state’s tourism infrastructure which will generate employment opportunities, attract private investment in the state, generate revenue for the Corporation, prevent illegal encroachment and will benefit the state economy.
