A great night’s sleep trumps great sex for more than half of the Asian respondents (52%) of a new global survey of sleeping habits, conducted by Westin Hotels & Resorts. Westin unveiled the results of its global sleep study of more than 12,500 frequent travellers this week – a follow-up to a sleep study the Starwood brand conducted a decade ago when it launched its now iconic Heavenly Bed. Since the launch, millions of travellers have benefitted, and today most say that the quality of sleep on the road has improved. In the 10 years since Westin’s original sleep study, the desire for sleep has increased, but sex lives have suffered. Today more than 50% of frequent travellers in Asia prefer a great night’s sleep to great sex, compared to just 31% who chose sleep over sex 10 years ago.
Many of those surveyed in Asia (60%) would go out of their way or pay more to stay at a hotel with their favourite bed, with about one in five surveyed saying that they were willing to pay US$100+ for a good night’s sleep. Other surveys results included 53% saying they’d rather have a sleeping pill on their hotel pillow than the ubiquitous chocolate, and 56% take a relaxant, sleep or stress medication when travelling overnight. 55% found that a great hotel bed provides a better sleep experience than at home, and 50% agreed that sleeping in a hotel bed while on a business trip is a “luxury” – a significant change from 10 years ago, when 82% of travellers found something to complain about hotel beds.
