British-based Guoman Hotels Group has opened a new hotel in China. The Guoman Hotel Shanghai is the group’s first property outside of the UK. It is part of an Asia expansion, which will see 40 to 50 hotels open in the next five years. To create a British feel, the company offers black taxi cabs for its Shanghai guests, as well as a British style concierge, butler service and British-themed restaurant and bar. “These elements will set our hotels apart and introduce a uniquely British character,” said Gouman COO International Sanjay Nijhawan. “British tradition and style is admired the world over and nowhere more than here in Asia, and we hope to capitalise on this as we roll out our luxury hotels across the region.” Another property is set to open in Beijing next year. Meanwhile, the group’s Thistle brand began its international expansion last year with two properties opened in Malaysia.
