“I was in Morocco for three days last week and the mood among the people was tremendously optimistic and upbeat. In fact people are worried that they are being tarred with the same brush as the less progressive states to the east.
“There were some relatively low scale protests last month focusing on administrative corruption and social reform, but no suggestion of regime change. In response the King has accelerated his reform programme announcing a step towards full democracy.
“Whilst I don’t think anyone really believes Morocco is yet ready for full democracy, this was a big step and seems to have genuinely lifted everyone’s spirits as they can see a way forward for their country for which there is so much pride.
“There is no doubt in my mind that Morocco is as safe to visit as it has ever been and I think, given the king’s actions, there is very little chance of growing unrest. The British Government would certainly not have let Prince Charles and Camilla visit if there was the remotest chance of them getting caught up in civil unrest (of course that could never happen to them in the UK, could it?).”
