The western Indian state of Gujarat is all set to promote its Mahatma Gandhi connection. As many as 21 places linked to the Father of the Nation are being developed for tourism, Gujarat’s Principal Secretary Tourism, Vipul Mittra, told IATO members in New Delhi. These are the places which the Mahatma covered during his famed Dandi March in March 1930, which shook the British Empire. To start with, seven such places will be developed this year, with mini museums and places to stay.Another thrust area for tourism now is to have 14 sites for coastal and beach tourism, along the 1600 km sea coast in the State, the longest in the country.Incentives are being given to operators to connect interstate and intrastate through small planes. The State has 12 domestic airports and one international one, at Ahmedabad.Interestingly, the involvement of superstar Amitabha Bachachan as Brand Ambassador had given rich dividends to tourism, the top burucrat claimed, revealing that even local people had started going to places within Gujarat, while earlier they knew more about villages and places in Switzerland.A venture fund, with government and private participation, was being set up to boost investments, and the infrastructure bodies were being roped in.Saputara, the only hill resort in the State, was also being developed and the many festivals celebrated throughout the year attracting thousands of domestic and international tourists.
