Throughput at Hat Yai Airport, Thailand, has recorded a big push in passenger traffic which rose nearly 40% in the 10 months to July.
According to Airports of Thailand (AoT), a total of 1.6 million passengers passed through the airport between 1 October 2010 and 31 Jul 2011. Total arrivals were up by 37.9% year-on-year for the period, while take-offs and landings rose 39.1%. Niran Teeranartsin, Acting President of AoT attributed the growth to an increase in domestic services by Nok Air and international services by Tiger Airways. He also cited improved security in southern Thailand and returning confidence among travellers.
Speaking to the Bangkok Post, Niran expects passenger traffic to increase as high season approaches and the local Muslims begin their Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in September and November.
