BAA has posted an increase in passenger figures last month after numbers at Heathrow reached a record 6.87 million. The airport operator said traffic had increased 08% across its airports during July, reaching 11.03m. Heathrow’s traffic increased 2.5% with 31 July its busiest day due to the school summer holidays. Meanwhile traffic at Stansted dropped 7.2% to 1.88m, which is thought to be an effect of its loss of domestic routes during the year. In fact domestic travel had decreased across BAA’s network by 7.2% as carriers reduce seat capacity and focus on emerging markets. Long-haul travel had contributed the biggest traffic increase including Brazil, the North America (up 5.6%) and North Africa. BAA’s Scottish airports, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, saw passenger number increases of 0.5%, 3.3% and 8.7% respectively. Meanwhile, Southampton airport returned to growth with a 2.4% increase. “The growth in passenger traffic at Heathrow in July is good news for UK jobs, tourism and growth. Heathrow’s unique role in linking the UK to the world’s emerging markets is vital to Britain’s economic recovery,” said Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA. He said Heathrow had introduced dedicated family lanes at security, restaurant deals and children’s play areas in terminals to help families travel during the summer.
