It would be the first time a cartoon character has become a goodwill ambassador for Japan under the government’s campaign to promote visits to the country, the report said, quoting officials.
Under its “Visit Japan Campaign”, Japan hopes to attract 10 million overseas tourists annually by 2010, up from 8.35 million last year.
The Tourism Ministry, which has so far appointed 11 people as goodwill tourism ambassadors, was quoted saying that the global icon was “qualified” for the job due to its popularity among Chinese people.
The report said a Hello Kitty blog would start next month on the Chinese language page of the campaign website to introduce tourist attractions in Japan.
Arrivals from China and Hong Kong, who accounted for 16.5% of visitors to Japan last year, are set to become the second-largest group of tourists after South Koreans this year, an Associated Press report said.
Hello Kitty was designed in 1974 by Sanrio.
