The US Airways pilot hailed for his heroic landing of a passenger plane in New York’s Hudson River on Friday, has described how “big, dark brown birds” filled his windscreen before his plane lost thrust, Bloomberg reported.
Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III, made the statement to the US’ National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is investigating the cause of the incident, from which 155 passengers and crew escaped largely without injury.
At 3,000 to 5,000 feet, Sullenberger had his head down monitoring instruments, and when he looked up, he said the windshield was “filled with birds,” the report said. The pilot then described hearing “booms”, and that he “smelled burning birds.”
