Growth in Hong Kong air passenger traffic slowed last month to the lowest rate this year as soaring crude oil prices dampened demand for air travel, an AFP report said, quoting the airport authority.
The Hong Kong International Airport reported a passenger volume of 4.5 million in July, a year-on-year increase of only 1.3%, compared to 8.3% in May and 5% in June this year.
“Airports and airlines worldwide are feeling the effects of surging fuel prices and economic uncertainties, conditions we expect will likely continue,” the authority’s Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hui was quoted saying.
“Airlines have started to reduce flight frequencies to contain losses. As a result, we anticipate a more difficult operating environment and slower growth for all categories of air traffic for the remainder of the year.”
