HK arrivals slump 13% in May

Figures released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) have shown that visitor arrivals in May 2009 fell by 13.4% year-on-year, to 2,027,572. The H1N1 flu outbreak is thought to have had a severe impact on arrivals, particularly from North Asia (-34.1%) and South and Southeast Asia (20.9%). Tourists from mainland China fell of 9.6% year-on-year.
The May results had a severe impact on year-to-date results, which had previously held up well against the effects to the global economic slowdown. January to May arrivals declines 1.4% year-on-year.
