More than 42,000 employees in Hong Kong’s hotel industry will receive bonuses equivalent to 2.7 to three months’ pay and salary increases of four percent during the year, The Standard reported.
It said it was the first time in a decade that hotel owners and labour unions have reached such a compromise, adding that the pact comes after more than 1,000 middle-to-senior management professionals left for higher salaries and positions in Macau’s new luxury hotels.
Despite keen competition from Macau, overall Hong Kong hotel occupancy last year was more than 80% percent while advance booking for three-star hotels for the upcoming Chinese New Year has reached 95 percent.
Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners executive director Michael Li Hon-shing said he expected more than 100 senior management professionals to leave their current positions as more than 10 large-scale hotels are due to be completed in Macau over the next few years.
But he said this is no longer as big a concern to Hong Kong hotel owners as was the case when The Venetian casino resort opened last year.
“We don’t fear them taking our staff away from us,” Li was quoted saying.
The industry faced a turnover rate of between 10 and 20% last year, the report said.
