Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw rising passenger and aircraft traffic in the first half of the year, welcoming 25.8 million passengers and recording 162,485 flight movements in the six-month period. This represents year-on-year growth of 5.7% and 12.1% respectively.
The growth was supported by a strong performance in June 2011. The number of passengers and flight movements at HKIA reached 4.4 million and 27,085 respectively in the month – an increase of 5.8% and 9.3% over the same month last year. The growth in passenger traffic in June was mainly driven by visitor traffic and Hong Kong resident travel which registered a growth of 8% and 7% respectively over the same period last year. Passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia performed particularly well.
Stanley Hui Hon-chung, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said; “Over the past six months, we have seen air traffic movements set a new daily record, and five new airlines started operating in HKIA. The promising performance reaffirms HKIA’s status as the international and regional aviation hub and a preferred gateway to the mainland.”
The five new airlines included Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines-based SEAIR, Mega Maldives, South Korea’s Air Busan and MIAT Mongolian Airlines. New flight connections include Denver, Medan, Male and Ulaanbaatar.
“For the remainder of the year, we expect the passenger and flight movement figures to continue the growth trend, albeit at a slower pace due to the strong performance last year,” Hui added.
From April to June 2011, the airport handled 13.3 million passengers and 82,615 flight movements, a 6.6% and 10.4% increase respectively over the same period last year.
