Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will create a huge nature reserve in the Pearl River Delta.
The measure was announced as part of an agreement that will allow it to continue with plans to build a third runway.
Following an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), the city’s Airport Authority (AA) was issued with an Environmental Permit (EP) for the work, but only on the condition that it puts into place measures to protect the local environment and mitigate the impact of the project. These include the creation of a 2,400-hectare marine park.
Fred Lam, CEO of the AA, said he was “delighted” to have received the permit and would abide by the report’s conditions.
“The AA is committed to carrying out all the mitigation measures proposed in the… EIA report, and fully complying with all the conditions listed by the Environmental Protection Department in a highly prudent, transparent and professional manner,” said Lam. “Our aim is to achieve a balance between economic development and conservation.”
The marine park will be the largest of its kind in Hong Kong and is designed to help preserve local wildlife in the Pearl River Delta, including Chinese white dolphins. The AA will also re-route high-speed ferries operating to and from the airport.
