Travellers have been flocking to North India over the festive period according to a recent survey. An Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) surveyed 3,500 tourists in major cities across the country including; Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram and Ahmedabad. Of those questioned 55% stated that they would be spending New Year in one of India’s northern cities, while 35% headed off to coastal destinations like Goa, Kerala, Rameshwaram, Puducherry and Thiruvananthpuram. This holiday season has seen a surge in tourist arrivals, particularly in the North, which has driven up occupancy rates and tourism revenues around the country. According to reports in The Hindu, the surge in demand has driven up room rates between 35-40% and the cost of food has also jumped by 25-35%.
