Hotel rooms to stretch technological capabilities into our sleep, says report

Technology in hotel rooms could go further than reality in the next 20 years, according to a new report. Travelodge, along with futurologist Ian Pearson, has predicted that technology within rooms could create augmented reality to help guests get a better nights’ sleep. The hotel chain claims that in 20 years ‘sleepwear’ would be able to monitor your body to check your blood pressure, pulse and heart, whilst massaging you to sleep and playing your favourite dream with music in the background. Not enough? How about bed linen that makes dreams feel real? Travelodge’s report predicts we’d be able to replay and share the dream Inception-style, just like a YouTube clip from your head. Whatsmore the hotel could install a dream management system to act as a coach, meaning you can cram in a new language or learn that speech in your head while you sleep. And that’s not all, as before you sleep, hotel rooms could provide active contact lenses worn under the eyelids to watch TV, check emails or, erm, make love with your far-away partner. The image of your partner could change at each blink depending what you’re thinking and ‘skin electronics’ would link the couples’ nervous systems [I personally find this a bit creepy – Ed.]. Meanwhile in the physical space, rooms could include interactive surfaces and atmospheric temperature control, with the option of skins to turn the room into an attraction, shop or even your room at home to feel as if you are actually there. While Travel Daily applauds the forward-thinking (and frankly quite cool) findings of this report, we can’t help but feel it is too ambitious considering most hotels have only just got WiFi connection. Nevertheless, we could be proven wrong if you’re reading this from your eyelids in 20 years’ time.
