Several hoteliers of Delhi and other areas in north India have expressed concern that the expected or promised tourism arrivals during the Commonwealth Games Delhi did not materalise, leading to low occupancies for most hotels, which saw a sub-par number of tourists staying in their properties.
Gurgaon and Noida, two satellite towns of Delhi, also had low occupancies and hoteliers lamented that while taxes were high, rooms were empty. Sushil Gupta, of Clarion, felt that things are improving now, and it was not fair to look only at the two week window of the CWG. Bharat Agarwal, Managing Director of Mansingh Group, felt that hotels in Agra and Jaipur also suffered because of the low turnout of tourists. Many hoteliers have been left wondering where the 75,606 foreign tourist arrivals during the games period disappeared to.
Saeed Shervani, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Northern India, said that the time has come when ‘the government needs to treat tourism as serious industry to realise its true potential. “This cannot be done if it remains the business of Ministry of Tourism alone which at present only acts as a facilitator as it neither controls the taxes nor the land which belongs to various agencies of the government.’ Former president of the Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Associations of India, Rajendera Kumar, believes that when the proposed tourism board comes into being, things may improve
