Qatar Airways is investing US$1 billion in Doha International Airport to cope with the huge growth in passenger numbers, fleet size and capacity, until the New Doha International Airport opens by 2012. The airline said the investment would improve airport infrastructure, including its dedicated Premium Terminal for the airline’s First and Business Class passengers.
At the current Doha International Airport, a new transit facility is soon due to open at the eastern apron for passengers with less than 60-minute flight connections, which, the airline says, will further increase Doha’s competitiveness as a worldwide hub. In addition, Qatar Airways’ Premium Terminal will have more than 80% extra seating space, which translates into an additional 250 seats to the current capacity of 320 following the opening next month of an extension to the dedicated Business Class section. Extra additions include more shower rooms, buffet and dining areas and an almost doubled duty free space.
Over the next 10 months, Qatar Airways will add six new routes to its network - Goa and Amritsar in India; Sydney and Melbourne in Australia marking its first foray Down Under; and two unnamed cities in Europe.
