Huge tunnel network to tackle Beijing congestion

Beijing will develop a huge network of underground tunnels in an effort to combat congestion on the streets of the Chinese capital, the city’s Mayor Guo Jinlong was reported telling Beijing’s annual legislative meeting on Sunday. Reported by the China Daily, Guo said that underground roads would be developed on the east and west sides of the Second Ring Road in 2011. The deepest section will be 60 metres underground. Construction will also begin on another 2km-long tunnel under Wangfujing Avenue, the city’s pedestrianised shopping area, later this year. In other developments, the city’s 336km-long metro system will be doubled by 2015, and nearly tripled by 2020, according to Guo.
