The Minister of Food Processing Industries, Sh. Subodh Kant Sahai, has mooted a scheme which will oversee the improvement of street food in 17 Indian cities. If the scheme proves successful, it would go a long way towards improving India’s reputation among holidaymakers who are deterred by bad hygiene. It is still early days though, as the Minister is still seeking approval from the Finance Ministry to begin two pilot projects. The ‘Safe Food Town’ scheme will be implemented across 11 cities, while the ‘food-street’ project will be applied in six cities including Hyderabad and Varanasi. If they prove successful, a comprehensive scheme will be introduced in the Ministry’s next Five Year Plan.
