Poor punctuality is costing Indian airlines dearly. In January 67,500 passengers were subject to delays of two hours or more which cost six leading domestic carriers INR27.72 lakh in compensation.
According to latest information from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, SpiceJet was the worst affected.
The budget carrier spent INR20.11 lakh compensating 17,480 passengers and a further INR8 lakh putting affected travellers up in hotels.
Around 16,300 of Jet Airways passengers were affected, while 12,056 flyers of GoAir, 11,042 of Kingfisher and 10,673 of IndiGo were hit by the flight delays last month.
IndiGo posted the best on-time performance through January with the lowest number of delays and cancellations in the market.
While SpiceJet forked out the most cash for service hiccups, Jet Airways Group was the worst offender.
A total of 5,547 Jet Airways passengers were affected by cancellations, while JetLite registered a 3.5% cancellation rate.
Of all flights cancelled in January, 65% were caused by bad weather, 8.3% were due to technical faults, 7.3% for commercial and 5% due to operational mishaps.
