An independent travel agent has accused large tour operators of not offering support or loyalty for smaller agencies. Graeme Brett, managing director of Westoe Travel hit back at big companies during an announcement that is it to join the AITO Specialist Travel Agents. “We have found that the independent companies, particularly those that are members of AITO, are far more supportive than the big companies of independent agents such as ourselves, regardless of the amount of business we produce,” said Brett. “They are very keen to work with us for mutual benefit. We will never forget the shock of one large operator telling us we were their best-performing independent agent and then, two days later, sending us an email saying they were reducing our commission.” The South Shields based company, which specialises in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA, is AITO’s 130th agent member. “The range of product offered by the AITO suppliers is superb and fits in with our policy of offering alternative and specialised holidays to our customers and working with suppliers based on mutual respect, trust and co-operation,” added Brett.
