Thousands of Indian airport workers have called off their strike against privatisation plans for two airports after talks with the government, reports said.
About 15,000 members of the Airports Authority Employees Union went on strike on Wednesday at 127 airports to protest plans to open private airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore, AFP reported.
The Hindu reported that the decision followed a government assurance from Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel that no airport would be closed down without consulting the employees.
Also, modernisation of 35 non-metro airports would be carried out with the full involvement of the Airports Authority of India workers, the report said.
The work stoppage had left garbage piling up and toilets overflowing.
Meanwhile, the government has postponed the commissioning of the new Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli till after May 10. It was scheduled to open on March 30.
Delays in the construction of air traffic control infrastructure and other facilities such as electricity supply and air-conditioning were other reasons for postponing the opening, the government was quoted saying in the AFP report.
