The Economic Times said the plan will focus on three areas: improving infrastructure from airports to the tourist destination; non-availability of hotel rooms and getting more skilled manpower to the industry.
“The government would soon come out with a vision document on tourism, considering the fact that the sector has managed to clock an impressive rate of growth over the past few years.
“The tourism industry is very buoyant and is recognised as a means of achieving higher economic growth,” a ministry official was quoted saying.
In the first six months of this fiscal year, the Ministry has allocated Rs 323 crore (US$82.5 million) to different states for tourism-related infrastructure development. This is for the first time that such grants have been given to states for tourism-related activities, the report said.
Some of the ideas being tossed are change in urban planning law t create tourism zones, setting up a national eco-tourism committee and institutes to develop skills and tourism education.
There are also plans to set up an India Heritage Tourism Funds to seed funding projects and set up a Creative India Heritage Tourism Award, jointly with UNESCO.
