The growth of its Indian network underscored Etihad Airways’ expansion efforts in 2015.
Publishing its full-year results this week, Etihad revealed that it carried 17.4 million passengers last year, marking an increase of 17% over 2014 levels. The airline operated 97,400 flights and accounted for 75% of traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Etihad increased frequencies on a total of 16 existing global routes in 2015, and seven of these were in India. Etihad boosted its services to Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram last year, as well as commencing a brand new service to Kolkata – one of six new destinations launched by the airline in 2015.
And Etihad’s Indian expansion will continue in 2016, with the launch of the airline’s first Airbus A380 flights to the country. The double-decker jet will be deployed on the Abu Dhabi-Mumbai route in May.
As well as its own expanding network, Etihad also operates a comprehensive codeshare partnership in India with Jet Airways.
