India pleads for easier Arab tourism

Anil Mathur reports that the India-Arab Conference, held in Delhi on 25March, saw Subhash Goyal, Chairman of STIC Travel Group and former President ofIndian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), told an the conference organisedby the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry that the old mentality oflooking to the West must change and that both India and the Arab world mustlook to each other to advance.
“Why should Indians travel to far off places in US and Europewhen they can go to Arab nations in less time?” Goyal asked, adding that therewas no logic in having to get dollars and pounds as exchange, which only meantpaying more commission to the developed world. Long before the advent ofaeroplanes, there were close trade ties between India and the Arab world, he explained.
Meanwhile, Moroccoleaders for pleaded that greater Indian investment by Indian companies in Arabnations. TAJ, Oberoi and others have reportedly shown interest. The largeIndian population, estimated between four and six million, in the 22 Arab nations,was noted as a factor that could significantly boost tourism.
