India has embarked on an ambitious programme to get repeat visitors and as part of this exercise, 20 short-haul destinations are being developed across the country.
Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni told The Great Indian TravelBazar 2008 in Jaipur that the idea was to enable tourists to come to places for weekends or short holidays directly, rather than go through the main cities only. Each of the 20 cities will get funds from the Tourism Ministry for this.
In Rajasthan, Ajmer, home to the Pushkar temple and Dargah, has been identified for the purpose. The bazaar is expected to be an annual event. As many as 14 States and 300 exhibitors are taking part in the three-day event.
