India said it has put in place several initiatives to develop its tourism industry and infrastructure centered around some mega projects.
India’s Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Kanti Singh, told a media briefing that the aim is to have 10 million international tourists and 60 million domestic tourists by 2010. Last year, India saw five million international tourists, a 12.4% rise from the previous year. To accommodate these growing numbers the Minister said the government is now allowing foreign investors to invest up to 100% equity on repatriation basis in hotel and tourism-related projects.
Efforts are being made to expand the visa-on-arrival facility at Indian ports.
India is also increasing boosting hotel capacity in time for the Commonwealth Games which it is staging in 2010.
The Minister said some 10,000 visitors and an equal number of athletes are expected at the event.
