Anjana Gosian, a lawyer and locg-time advisor to the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), has asked the agents to be aware of the present consumer laws in order to avoid litigation and problems. She told a meeting of IATO members that the consumer courts were making sure that consumers get what they are promised by the tour operators. In this context she said, it was vital that guests are told in clear terms of what to expect and what exactly is within the control of the operators. In fact, the problem has reached such proportions that it was suggested that a longer half day or full day seminar be held on the subject so that the operators know how to draft their agreements, to avoid potential problems with principals, hotels, transporters or clients. Ms Gosain noted that in recent cases, consumer forums were no longer satisfied by the operators merely taking the plea that things were beyond their control.
