International visitor arrivals to India continued to increase in November 2015, although the country’s full-year growth rate is likely to be significantly lower than in 2014.
According to the latest data from India’s Ministry of Tourism, a total of 815,000 overseas visitors travelled to India last month, up 6.5% compared to 765,000 in November 2014. This brings the total number of arrivals for the first 11 months of the year to 7.1 million, 4.5% higher than the same period in 2014.
But this is significantly less than the 10% growth India saw for the full-year 2014, despite the steps the government has taken to increase international arrivals, such as the expansion of the tourist e-visa programme.
In November 2015, the USA was India’s top international source market, accounting for 15.8% of total arrivals. Bangladesh (12.3% of the total) was second, ahead of the UK (11.0%), Canada (4.5%), Australia (4.2%), Malaysia (3.43%) and Russia (3.4%).
And India’s tourism revenues declined significantly in November 2015, falling 10.6% year-on-year to INR116.1 billion (US$1.7bn). For the first 11 months of the year, India’s tourism revenues are now up just 1.0% over the same period in 2014, at INR1.13 trillion.
